Toner not recognised or printing

If after installing a new toner the printer does not recognise the toner or gives an error message. Take out the toner and check that the chip, reinsert the toner ensuring that it is seated correctly and perform a hard reset.

A hard reset is when you switch off the mains supply from a machine, without following any shut down procedure the manufacturer has in place.

How does it work?

Inside most modern machines are processors, designed to manage how the machine works. When they leave the factory, all the required information is already installed (how to put ink / toner onto the paper where it is needed, how to understand what the computer is saying etc). During use, it is easy for there to be multiple signals passing between the different parts of a machine, causing conflicts of information, or even stoppages of processing. When you shut these machines down normally, they run until all necessary information is saved and in the right place. When you perform a hard reset, the sudden loss of power means the printer diverts capacitors (Little tanks of electricity) to save the most critical information.

How to perform a hard reset

The length of time it takes for a machine’s capacitors to discharge varies from machine to machine, so most people give a time frame of (at least) 5-10 minutes. This means the machine should be fully shut down.

Whilst the printer is on remove the power cable from the back of the printer. leave the printer off for a minimum of 5 minutes. Insert the power cable back into the printer and switch the printer back on this will re-initialise the machine,it can only use the information it has saved (the factory presets, and usually other parts like saved user settings, firmware update etc). So this should clear any error message. If you still have a problem, please try the above again, leaving off for a longer period.
